‘Roja Ridin’ performed in Washington DC

DC News reports on the July 31 production of my play “Roja Ridin’ in the Hood and Other Tales” as  the Paso Nuevo youth program’s show at the Gala Hispanic Theatre in Washington DC.

Four classic tales are reimagined with Latino characters and culture in the one-act children’s play, ROJA RIDIN’ IN THE HOOD AND OTHER TALES.

Preteen Roja takes her ailing abuelita a box of food. When she takes a short cut down Forest Street she encounters a menacing wolf in a thumping lowrider and defeats him with bravery and stinky cheese.

An arrogant student nicknamed El Rey is a fashionista tyrant who hurts the feelings of others who all want to be cool like him. But a gutsy student at least shows him his true colors.

A young and lonely bruja (witch) has had enough of the annoyingly vain and bratty Bonita and puts her to sleep at her Quinceanera, though she feels guilty about it. But the witch ends up falling for the young farmer who comes to wake the beauty.

The three Chicharron pig brothers are sent into the world by their successful father to make their fortunes and build a house. Of course, two of them would rather sleep and gamble but with the help of their youngest bro, they deal with a wolf that has an appetite for real estate.

The play is based on my award-winning children’s book, “Red Ridin’ in the Hood and Other Cuentos.”
