New play is quarterfinalist

My new play, PLEA, is a quarterfinalist in the ScreenCraft Stage Play Competition.

Plea deals are mostly what Lettie Maldonado handles in her job as a public defender. But her newest defendant, a woman who shot her estranged, abusive and unarmed husband, refuses to make a dea,l and that forces Lettie to see her job in a new way. What adds to the complications is that Lettie’s personal life is going to hell, and her alcoholic mother is not helping. When she finally goes to trial, her defendant is not the only one put to the test.

The play was inspired by the many years I spent covering courts and crime as a reporter for a newspaper and TV station.

Whether or not I go on in the contest, it’s still an honor.
