‘Red Ridin’ book focus of presentation

A University of Barcelona associate professor presented a program called “Fractured Fairy Tales and Subversion: Red Ridin’ in the Hood and Other Cuentos” in March 2024 via the Interdisciplinary Humanities Center in Santa Barbara, California.

According to the IHC site, “the Mexican American author makes use of a series of elements to provide a Latinx version of these fairy tales to counterbalance the lack of representation of Latinx children in the books she read growing up in the United States. In this presentation, Marina Bernardo Flórez will explore the elements Marcantonio modifies in order to subvert these fairy tales with a Latinx flavour.”

Flórez received her Ph.D. in Representation and Construction of Cultural Identities at the University of Barcelona. She researches Chicanx children’s literature and carried out postdoctoral research as a visiting scholar at the University of California, Santa Barbara (2023) within the Fulbright Program. She is a member of the International Research Society for Children’s Literature (IRSCL) and the Children’s Literature Association (ChLA). She is currently an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Barcelona.

“Red Ridin’ in the Hood and Other Cuentos” was published by Farrar Straus and Giroux and been out of print for a few years. I obtained back my rights and this year, I will release a new version with new illustrations and a bonus story.
